 There's just four weeks to go before the 2023 Combe Down Art Trail! The map of venues and list of artists is now printed, with 34 artists taking part in 22 venues, including 7 street galleries where children's posters - from nurseries, toddler groups and primary schools - will be hung on the railings around the village. This is our most inclusive art trail yet, including art at the Peggy Dodd Centre where the oldest client is 103! Artists' posters too will be hung on railings as part of the vibrant street scene. As well as including more artists than ever, we also have the largest artwork in the history of our art trail! Noah's Rainbow, made by Rosemary Simmons, is created from recycled hot-air balloon fabric, with each panel measuring a whopping 2.7 x 1.5 metres! The artwork represents the rainbow that Noah saw after the Great Flood and which he understood to mean that better times will come. Artwork in our community reflects this optimism as well as the joy of creating all the paintings, prints, sculptures, ceramics, jewellery, textiles and photographs that you will find on the trail. In addition, we're delighted that one of artists and hard-working team volunteers, Catherine Beale, has a book out titled "Capturing Light'. In Catherine's words: "It is my guide to creating radiant landscapes and, as part of Search Press' Innovative Artist series, taking a very personal look at how I like to push the boundaries of watercolour methods and materials. Its 500 colour illustrations include many of my recent landscapes, over 176 imaginative pages." Published by Search Press, it is available to buy through them, as well as in bookshops, and many online retailers such as SAA, Artcoe, WHSmith, Bookshop, and Amazon. Congratulations Catherine! "Capturing Light is a must for artists who wish to investigate the subtle qualities of light with an emphasis on creating dramatic, imaginative landscapes." We will start hanging the street gallery artwork from Tuesday 5th September - on railings outside the schools, churches and nurseries and on walls. The venues themselves will be open during the art trail weekend Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th September, 10am - 4pm.

With 22 venues, including seven street gallery venues, our 2023 art trail really captures the spirit of our creative village. Taking place on Saturday 9th - Sunday 10th September, 10am - 4pm, make a note in your diary. It's not to be missed!
Combe Down Art Trail opens its studios and venues on 9th and 10th September for another exciting weekend of artwork, from paintings, prints and photographs to glass, ceramics, textiles, sculptures and many other examples of local artistic talent. We are especially delighted to include the newly refurbished St Andrew’s Community Centre in Hawthorn Grove where several artists will display their work. Hands-on events at the Centre include art sessions and music workshops for all to join in.  Altogether 33 artists are taking part, several new to the trail. Children’s nurseries and toddler groups, Combe Down Primary School in and around the streets, creating a village gallery. Peggy Dodd Centre is displaying artwork as well as selling tea, coffee, and cake. Textile panels will hang on the wall opposite the entrance to Mulberry Way.
Head of the art trail committee, Sally Jefferies, said “This year we have artwork from all age groups in the village, from 2 to 103 years old, which gives us the broadest and most inclusive art trail ever. Ideas and themes encompass endangered species, fossils, clouds, and the environment. As well as encouraging art across our community we also aim to be environmentally aware by reusing and recycling as much as possible, from the red and green lanterns at venues to numbers and arrows along the route.” It's set to be another great year for the Combe Down Art Trail!  This year we again aim to reduce, reuse and recycle to keep costs down and do our bit to help protect the environment whilst putting on a good art trail.

The Museum of Bath Stone has been refurbished and unfortunately is not available as a venue for artists this year. If you have enjoyed exhibiting at the Museum in the past please think about trying the Community Centre this year or let us know if you have other ideas for venues. Village gallery

FEES We have kept the fee at £30 which covers the costs of the posters, items we have to buy, advertising and the charges for the art trail website. We will reuse as many lanterns and venue numbers saved from the last art trail to keep costs to a minimum. What to do now

The Combe Down Art Trail takes place this year on Saturday 10th - Sunday 11th September, 10am - 4pm. It’s a great community event full of ceramics, paintings, prints, sculpture, craft, photography, cards and music. The village is abuzz! Mostly artists open their own studio doors but there are also a few local venues where artists can exhibit their work. If you’re a local artist who would like to know more, get in touch. Or if you have a local venue you’d like to offer for the weekend, please let us know. We’re always keen for fresh ideas so get in touch if you think you could offer the trail something different! Thank you to everyone who came along and supported this year's art trail! We hope you all had as good a time as we all had. We were certainly blessed with fantastic weather that allowed our visitors to explore each venue - around 250 visitors in all! It was lovely to see everyone wandering around with maps and deciding where to go next. Here is a collection of snapshots from the weekend! Thank you too to all the artists who took part and especially those who did demonstrations, as well as those who helped put up the banners, posters and maps - and, just as importantly, took them down again!
The voluntary art trail team worked very hard to ensure the trail could go ahead safely so thank you to Sally Jefferies, Catherine Beale, Shuya Cheng, Vikki Yeates, and Ele Nash. We couldn't do the trail without the support of the community so thanks too to Miranda at the Museum of Bath Stone, Gill at the Peggy Dodd Centre, Lizzie at the Hub, and Christina at the Jewish Burial Ground. Many thanks for making it such a successful art trail this year. We're off to produce artwork ready for the next one (after a good lie down!)
Today as well as ceramics, sculpture, paintings, prints, embroidered art, soft furnishings, photography, cards for sale direct from the artist over 14 venues, there is: Clay demonstrations from 12 noon at venue 2 (18 Porlock Road); The Bath Jewish Burial Ground (just by venue 6, Greendown Place), open to visitors from 11am - 4pm as part of Heritage Open Days; Relief print demonstrations at venue 8 (RT Framing, Combe Road) from 10am - 1pm; Cream Teas at the Peggy Dodd Centre (Summer Lane), venue 10, 11am - 3pm; Cakes from Roasted Lemon at venue 12 (edge of Firs Field) from 11am - 4pm…  We had a great day yesterday, with lots of visitors all enjoying the dry weather and community spirit, as well as being inspired by the demonstrations, sketchbooks, artwork on show. Thank you to everyone who came and we hope to see more of you again today!
